Your “betters”

Why do supervisors and management get so upset when employees don't treat them like they are superior? I'm not talking about blatant disrespect and stuff like that. I'm just talking about treating them as you would any other person – neutral, equal, competent colleague in a different department or career path- not all buddy-buddy either. Are they more likely to be up in arms about it if the employee has higher qualifications than their position in the firm would indicate (but maybe in a different field, which they can't seem to get into because they got niched and pigeonholed) perhaps equal or about equal if not higher than the supervisor's position.
