Hey y’all. The holiday season is here! Do you know what that means for the package delivery service? It means those of us loading trucks are being walked on again.
I’m writing this on Friday, and this week has been ridiculous. We normally come in to work somewhere around 3am-5am and finish up between 9am-9:30am. This week we have all worked from 12:30am to 10:30am.
Honestly, I don’t mind the extra time on paper due to anything over 5 hours daily being overtime, but something has got to give with these breaks. We are allowed a 10 minute break every 3 hours, but NOW management has decided that they are allowed to call those breaks whenever they feel like. For a job where we are moving 1000+ pieces that can range from 2lbs to 150lbs and we aren’t allowed to sit down, you can probably see the issue.
So yesterday everyone shows up at 12:30 and works until break is called at 2. We then load trucks until 9:30 before being given a second break. At that point it would be 9 hours total so what about our third break? Never got one.
After 6 I purposefully slowed down incredibly. Packages were stacked around my entire area and I left anything over 70lbs out until I could get help moving them.
Everyone keeps saying the job is worth it because of our very good health insurance, but I’ve never had to use it aside from when I’ve gotten hurt at work. So it seems counterintuitive. Also this job has sent me down many MANY mental health spirals the past 3 years. I’ve been told things like “you aren’t acting like a man” and screamed to “YOU’RE AN ASSHOLE” for telling a supervisor I won’t work in a way that is unsafe.
This is just the tip of the iceberg, my friends, and the only reason they keep getting away with it is because they churn through people quickly and hire in new guys that haven’t seen how bad it is here yet.
I’ve already been told (through a text!) I have to attend a meeting on Monday where I’ll be written up for calling in today and refusing to work Saturdays. (One of my days off) Though I’m considering just presenting them a letter of resignation as soon as I walk in the room for the meeting.
I’d like some input on if I’m being dramatic or not, because one of the truck drivers said “how can you be stressed from this job” and my family keeps saying to just keep working for the insurance. I suppose I’m feeling invalidated?
