I will not be a dick. I will endeavor to be friendly, approachable, and empathetic. I will follow through on my promises and if something happens that doesn't make this possible I will tell you as soon as possible. I won't ask you to do anything I either haven't done myself or am not willing to do. If you have either asked for or are due a raise or promotion, I will keep you in the loop as we progress towards a decision and timeline. This leads to the next point: Whenever possible, I will try to see things from your perspective. I will remember that the things important to you should also be important to me. I will not, under any circumstances, micromanage. I hired you because you were highly qualified and capable to perform the duties you've been given. Unless you give me a reason otherwise, I will…
Month: April 2022
I've tried every shoe imaginable. I'm in reasonable shape, but standing in one place all day kills my feet. I don't understand why working comfortably is considered unprofessional.
UK Here. Went for an interview today at a company in a local business park. I arrive 15 minutes early, and see there's just a standard foyer with locked doors into where I had to go. So I attempt their intercom system 3 times, in between I also attempt to both open the door and peek in to grab someone's attention. By this point it's 15 minutes past the interview time and nobody has came to even see of I'm there… So I walk. And I call the recruiter to tell her what happened. At which point she says oh maybe it was a error I'll call them on your behalf and get them to let you inside. I tell her no of they haven't got the decency to fucking look out a DOOR into their literal waiting room, why should I bother. I've literally lost a half days wage…
It’s 4pm on the dot
I work in a hotel doing catering, a little while ago we finally got a new assistant catering manager (ACM for short) after the current catering manager (CM) finally got sick of doing the work of 2 people, for the pay of 1 (more like .75 but I digress). As such we've (as in mostly the new ACM and myself) been cleaning the rooms out that we were using for storage during Covid in order to nearly double the available rooms to use for catering. The ACM got real excited about the prospect of having every possible room full (there's about 10 rooms in total, although they all vary in size) and when I replied that I didn't really care if we had 1 room rented or all since I get paid the same wage regardless because our grats are capped she replied that the reason for the flat rate…
My Petty Manager
So today was my last day at a miserable place to work. I had been here and been a top performer for almost 4 years and had nothing to show for it. I was passed up on 3 promotions that I was more than qualified for one manager said, “you are overqualified” and others told me to keep working hard and I would go far in the company HAHA. The moments that led up to me leaving were: my manager not having my back when i knew and could prove in writing i was right about something, my manager getting defensive when i criticized how the department ran and how it could be fixed. A HUGE problem with miscommunication and a big side of nepotism i also carried a lot of the weight in my part of the department since management allowed the 2 other employees to disappear for a…
I’m writing this on a throwaway account for reasons that I believe will become obvious as you read. I have been a practicing public defender in a major American metropolitan city for roughly seven years. It is likely no secret that public defense lawyers have been criminally underpaid (pun intended) in most jurisdictions around the country; it was no different in my city. A bit of background: The way my jurisdiction operates is that each public defender or team of defenders have corresponding prosecuting attorney counterparts in the District Attorney’s office. Throughout my entire seven years, we have been paid far less than our opposing counsels. When I started at my office, I made $61k. As of two weeks ago, over the course of seven years, I was making $77k. My opposing DA was making just under $100k. Well, as many of us in this sub know, the job market…
