If, uprooting from its heart the vice which dominates it and degrades its nature, the working class were to arise in its terrible strength, not to demand the Rights of Man, which are but the rights of capitalist exploitation, not to demand the Right to Work which is but the right to misery, but to forge a brazen law forbidding any man to work more than three hours a day, the earth, the old earth, trembling with joy would feel a new universe leaping within her. But how should we ask a proletariat corrupted by capitalist ethics, to take a manly resolution Paul Lafargue, 1883. Source

So a bit of backstory. I'm in my early 30s and I've been working since I was 14. This is the longest I've ever gone without working. I started with a paper route, and then got my first 'real' job when I was 16. I was still in high school, and sacrificed homework, good grades, and social time because I had to help keep my family afloat. At that time, I worked six days a week with the equivalent of full-time hours with only Sundays off. I've had a job almost all of my life, except for a rough patch during the economic recession from 2011-2013, when I finally got a job after a year and a half of being unemployed but heartily searching. That job in particular put me through absolute hell. I stayed for six years, enduring mental and verbal abuse, being denied raises for some years despite…
As in the title, I worked for an impressively shitty courier firm in London as an in-house mechanic and after leaving I left them a frank and honest glassdoor review stating my issues with the company. This followed an equally frank and honest exit interview where the operations manager admitted to sharing a lot of my sentiments around issues with the firm (such as the total lack of benefits). I recently had a long and unsettling company response to my negative glassdoor review, alongside a number of clearly fake reviews all posted in the week following my negative review. Does anyone have any advice for this situation? I have of course reported the fake reviews to glassdoor but it feels frustratingly pointless and doesn't approach the actual root of the issue.
Found out our paycuts today
Found out our payrises today, below inflation of course, our workloads have increased roughly 50% as of last week and I'm too damn anxious and depressed to keep looking for another job. Im not having children because of the absolute mess the world is in, because i cant give them a better life than mine. Im never going to retire or enjoy the comfort of knowing im safe under a roof i own. Ive lost so many friends to suicide, all i can think anymore is how fucking selfish, that could have been me. Im not going to do it but ive worked out how i would. Im not nearly the worst off, how does everyone keep going? I've been telling myself one more step forward my entire life and at nearly 30 the system has broken me so many times. Probably not the right sub to post in and…
HR is not there to protect you. HR does not work for the worker. Saving emails, documenting incidents and bringing them to HR isn’t always in your best interest. HR’s sole purpose is to protect the company from liability and resource management. Workers being the resource. Workers being the liability. I often see advice from people on this sub suggesting “document everything about your shit manager and bring it to HR.” “Go to HR to protect yourself from wrongful termination”. HR is not there to protect the worker. They work for the company. They are there to help employers legally fire employees without liability. They don’t often decide who is or is not disciplined. That is usually dependant upon the supervisor. HRs job is to assist the supervisor in carrying out lawful disciplines. Depending on the size of the company sometimes HR does the disciplines themselves. They will help the…
We “fired” our boss today!
Couple of months ago I started working for a very small graphic design firm. The whole team was made up of 4 people and the owner. We had 2 big clients, so 3 of us were working on projects and 1 was coordinating and taking care of the rest of the company basically. Not only was the workload insane, but the boss was just never there. She’s peaked in every once in a while, called us to complain and collected her pay-check. The pay wasn’t great either. We knew exactly how much the company makes as well.. we were running it. She takes about 80% of the net profit. About a month ago we spoke to her about a) hiring more people, b) increased pay, c) more structure. None of it was addressed and she basically told us that due to the economic situation around nothing can be done. So…
