Wondering if there are other Brits here

See a lot of posts about what minimum wage should be in the US, and was wondering how people think that translates to Britain. For reference our minimum wage is £9.50, which is $12.45 at the moment. Cost of living is pretty similar (0.5% lower in UK apparently). Just interested in how people think these compare.

Workers have a lot of leverage and power right now. Will the powers that be engineer a recession to destroy this?

I keep seeing discussion of a coming recession in the news. It has me worried that this is a set up to push people back into the sort of labor market that existed a few years ago.

Return to office email

My manager that I have no contact with other than signing my paycheck sent a mass email about returning to the office and coming in 2-3 times a week. I work for a tech outsourcing firm for the past 6 months and have been contracted to my first project for a month. My job has been completely remote. I practically have no contact with the outsourcing firm since I have been put on on my project. I would be going to the outsourcing firm office, not even the office of the company I’m contracted out to. My project team has people across the world. Nobody at my firm that is contracted to the same team as me is even in the same state. Our only contact is online even if I go into the office. So it makes absolutely no sense to go to the office. I can’t quit yet…

hand made vs. machine made. A critique from a dying trade.

Please watch this video before reading my response to it. https://youtu.be/d3QEpQ9ozVU I am a glass blower of ten years. This video is circulated within the culture but I feel as though it is watched for the glassblowing, but the message within it is often overlooked. Here's my take on what lies beneath its surface…. This film is a beautiful comparison between the two methods, hand made vs. machine made. I believe the former method of production expresses a natural beauty found within labour performed by hand. A beauty that is derived from the purpose that which the labour fuffils – and the connection between the body and mind of the labourer to their craft or trade. At the begining of the film these men may be perceived as happy or at least content within their trials at work. This is supported by the choice of backing music and ease of…

Management says we have to work on the plane

When we all travel for a company-wide meeting, one of the expectations is that we work on the airplane. They even give us tasks to complete. Am I wrong for thinking this is ridiculous? Planes are uncomfortable to work in and I don't even really like flying. I wouldn't be on the plane if it wasn't for work, so I'm sorry but I'm not doing anything. I'm putting headphones on and maybe sleeping. We're also encouraged to network on the plane. Nope.

The legal right to 28 days (UK)

This is a vent/rant as I don't know how else to get rid of this anger at my employer. Small company, less than 10 people. I joined them part way through a holiday year. Came the end of the holiday year and was told I had 1 day left to take. I checked and found only 22 days taken (inc.bank holidays). Based on .gov calculations I should have a total of 26 to take as I was not employed while the bank holidays took place to absorb my annual entitlement. I raised this as a legality, none specific to my entitlement and over the course of 2 weeks I went from being seen as “blue collar work your ass off through lunch breaks and staying late” to “problem lazy worker who is trying to scam time off” even though my working hard habits never changed. I had to fight them…

Is there anything I can do to inconvenience psychotic service industry managers as a customer that doesn’t harm/inconvenience employees?

I feel ambiguous about clout bloggers using information from this sub – any thoughts?

When I see clickbait-y nonsense on a listicle or Buzzfeed-esque social media share-driven platform or snap story, I’m torn. On the one hand, I am grateful enough I suppose to see the sentiment being given a platform, thus exposing more of the general public to the discourse and potentially growing membership of the discontent. On the other hand, fuck aggregate posters for exploiting the pain and growth of our members for ad revenue (solidarity with underpaid freelance writers pulling jobs off a board – they’re victims , too) But like, over exposure will cheapen the measure and attention and potentially turn a movement into a retired flavor of the week. I’m frustrated that I can’t reconcile those thoughts into a coherent feeling, and any discussion/interpretation would be appreciated.
