For those of you unfamiliar with his work, David Graeber (1961-2020) was an anthropologist who wrote BS Jobs: A Theory in 2018. It provides some useful ideas and vernacular. He categorized BS employment as follows: flunkies goons duct tapers box tickers taskmasters I agree with 4 out of these 5. I've been all of them except for goons. I'm not convinced being a guard is an unnecessary or BS job. I can be, if you are guarding something that doesn't need protection, for example, a celebrity that has to have a body guard as part of the entourage. That's more a form of ornamental employment, hence the term funky or lackey is more appropriate. If the need for a job is based on a necessary evil, is it BS? No. In a world where conflict is often resolved through the courts, the halls of Congress or the battlefield, jobs like…

Seemed like a great side gig
Seemed like a great side gig, until I realized you'd have to use your own car to teach the lessons. How many lessons would I have to teach to pay for a new transmission?
Shitty work story of the week
My work place has been recently pushing everyone back to work in the office and have been on everyone's ass about. Today i had somebody lecture me like a child just for coming into work 30 minutes late. It's not like I don't work at all in the morning. I actually work on my laptop for a bit in the morning before leaving office, the reason why I came a little bit late was to avoid unnecessary traffic. Leaving at 7 or 8 means that I will have a 2 hour commute whereif I just leave my house an hour later, I can shorten my travel by 1 hour. It's absurd that the company doesn't understand the employee's perspectives with how much time and gas they can save (especially in a time of exponentially rising gas prices). Funny I've been here for 4 years of my life and have gotten…
arbitration agreement
How do you guys feel about jobs that make you sign a arbitration agreement. Didn’t know this was a thing, got hired on to a well known car company today that made me sign one. Also made me sign a agreement to deduct money from my paychecks every week(around 10 dollars) to rent my uniform, I.d, and badge. Just curious how other people would feel about this. Seems a little off to me.
I am currently a student and have set clear scheduling hours with my boss and managers numerous times. I can only legally work a certain amount of hours a week (20 hours). I gave them a list of days and times that I can work (only morning shifts though because I have schooling in evenings and I would go days without sleeping if they tried to work me at nights on my off days). The times and hours I have them were perfect and ensured I got my hours and was able to support myself without and conflict of schedules. Their response? They cut me down to less than 10 hours a week and are trying to work myself back to back night shift/day shift and are giving my hours someone who keeps coming to work high/drunk and has to be sent home early. I confronted them about this and…
Should I quit my Job Today?
I hate my current Job. At my current place of employment I'm working nights which are 12 hour shifts. I have an interview that looks very hopeful next Monday. Should I wait until after? Or follow my heart and quit now?
She got here at 10:30, did 6 Tik Toks then left for an appointment…Glad I can't work from home after 2 successful years of productivity.
