I am a software developer with two software development jobs currently. I am a thirld world contractor but both jobs expect me to work full time. I am very well paid considering where I live (a poor latin american country) at around 5000 and 5500 usd monthly for each job respectively. The only reason I got a second job was because I had “quietly quit” my first job and was doing the bare minimum without getting fired and realised I had so much free time I could probably get a second job. Also got back with my ex and suddenly I need much more money than when I was single lel. Anyways. Noone at either job knows and if they did they would probably find what I do immoral. I am officially a contractor and don't really feel bad about it as according to the US atleast as a contractor…
Month: September 2022
I'm in college and planning on graduating, but am scared of what a “real job” is going to be like. But the ones I had, mainly fast food and retail, somehow found a way to irritate me and this feels like a good subreddit to let it out.
Almost getting burned out and WFH really changed me as a person. At my first job, I drank the consultancy kool-aid and thought I was a big girl making lots of money and doing cool stuff. That was until I caught myself thinking “does anyone at work care if I 'accidentally' fell in front of a train?”. I also realized that, no matter how ambitious someone was, it all came down to how management wanted to improve their own status with national and international management. My second job (2021) was at a much smaller company where, no matter how hard I worked to fix everyone else's shit code, I wouldn't get more than an inflation correction. It was a titanic sized project waiting to hit an iceberg. At my current job, an international company again, I couldn't give two shits about anyone beyond my team. Tomorrow the whole department is…
Boss of my roommate was used as a reference for a new job. Her interview went amazing and they seemed really happy with her and then suddenly the job was posted again. After this she applies to the gas station down the street who is friends with the other business and the manager calls her manager to tell him what he saw. He flipped out on her and was like so and so quit we need you here why were u trying to leave blah blah blah. Roommate thinks he sabotaged her. Is there anything she can do? Is talking to the other employer to save face even a thing. Can she get her manager in trouble if she gets proof? We are in canada
So the store rotated managers until they could find a permanent. I did go back since no one was looking to hire for just a month. This manager helped me, let me have Tusedays and Thursdays off since I made it clear I had a class those days. The manager before her (he was from California, so is this sort of non-negotation normal for Californians?) who wouldn't work with me was the reason I quit first time. And he trained the permanent manager. The one willing to work left leaving me with the permanent one. The California manager kept scheduling me outside my availability. I felt like I had to keep reminding him, and I even wrote it down on a piece of paper for him. I could get it sorted out but I made it on me to find someone to switch shifts with (or what, miss my class?).…
Getting laid off tomorrow
So me and a bunch of other guys I work with (we’re electricians for reference) got calls saying we have a meeting early tomorrow morning and its not going to be good. An insider in the office let us know they plan to lay us all off. This is after months of having people quit and move to better/higher paying companies. We are the ones that stuck it out, and corporate has decided to give us the boot Any advice on how to spice up that meeting tomorrow morning? (We aren’t being laid off for performance, I turned down an interview this week because I was asked what it would take to keep me here and was hopeful of better times) TLDR : They begged us to stay and are now getting rid of us, the ones who stayed and kept the company working
When I started for the company I was given my company shirt and jacket no charge, needed it to do the job. New employees are being told they must now pony up $50 for the company’s shirt and jacket. They make minimum wage. Is this legal? I have seen so many conflicting posts online saying it’s legal. Or it isn’t legal if they make minimum wage.
