I just started working at UPS this week. Second day on the job and my supervisor is advising me on how the fit the remaining boxes into an already stuffed truck. He tells me I’ve gotta pack it tight like a man’s ass. I respond “wait, what was that” to make sure I heard him and to see if he’d repeat himself. He says it again…I acknowledge and brush it off. It’s didn’t offend me and it wasn’t directed at me personally but I’ve got to say, shit like this makes it so hard to be openly gay at work. I’m and man’s man type of guy so people never suspect that I’m gay. I have worked and still work in an industry where men like to prove their masculinity which puts me in an uncomfortable position because though I look like a bro, I don’t relate to anything they…

I can’t afford to get fired for that but I want to be respected… should I just act my wage and go from there or…?
Long story short i was flown to Portland for what was advertised as a work and have fun type adventure where we canvassed for political candidates. My buddy told me it was horrible but i went anyway, figured i could handle it. Then the owner, my friends friend, began to change and say cutting things to me for no reason. Finally, i said i had seen a different side of him and i did not enjoy it, which caused him to flip out, call me and fire me and fly me home which totally fucked his own company up. I thought i was doing him a favor! I guess the lesson is dont help your friends out but thats not how i want to live. Just be clear and strong with your boundaries?
Wage theft? Or honest mistake?
We work up in rural Alaskan for the season. Very few rules in this state, almost no one to enforce them. Still the “last frontier”, and that goes for businesses as well. Cutthroat practices with no oversight. A friend of mine works at a local breakfast joint that caters to tourists. When he got his check, it was ridiculously low— slave wages of like $12, in an area where the cost of living is sky high (a pound of apples up here is like $4.69, for reference). When he altered his employer, he got this shady text back. How do we determine wage theft VS an honest human mistake? What laws are in place federally regarding this? It just feels so sketchy.
“Worker Shortage.”
I was fired from my previous job about 2 months ago despite having doctor's notes — I live in a at will state. Since then, I have applied to over 30 jobs. I've heard back from 2 and both of which are hard physical labor warehouse jobs, and both are for “graveyard” shifts. I don't think there's a worker shortage. I think there's a majority of businesses not willing to hire for whatever reason. I've completely dug through my savings just to pay bills and buy groceries. I had to buy ramen noodles today. The stress is overwhelming to a degree.
