Minor complaint in the grand scheme, but still frustrating. My boss came into my office on Friday around 1:45 (we get off at 3:00 on summer Fridays) and asked if I could do some work over the weekend, to prepare for a 9am meeting Monday. I was initially hesitant, but gave in to help lean into the team atmosphere and play my part. I contributed probably 4-5 hours on Sunday night. Come yesterday, I get in early to review the material with him and do some last minute prep for the 9am meeting, but he’s essentially prepared the material himself and does not want to review or use any of the material I prepared. No heads up, no warning, nothing. The meeting completes with little help from me, and nothing I did on Sunday mattered. Frustrated with the lack of communication and disregard for my personal time, not sure if…
There's a very popular fast/casual restaurant in northern Rhode Island that recently moved down the street into a new location. Brand new building, beautifully landscaped property with large fields, a pond, bridges over a stream, etc… It's been scorching hot out, and next to the restaurant (on the same property) is a brand new out-building that's a creamery/cafe. I stopped in today to get some ice cream, and couldn't believe how hot it was inside there. They had the windows and doors open, but it didn't matter. The employees working in there had sweat pouring down their faces. On the back wall, I noticed a shiny new mini-split air conditioner turned off. I looked at the employee and asked “…are you not allowed to use the air conditioner?” The employee replied “Our ability to use it got taken away” …and a customer behind me goes “Ah Marc is a very…
I was just thinking hard since I work in the government sector almost 16 years. I tried to pick up the slack due to being really short staffed also volunteered to go to training for different job duties. I all of sudden got my pick given to other coworker to save costs which was ridiculous. I emailed my union but doubt they can do anything. I have the email saying I was chosen but my manager switched me with other coworker without telling me. Im not going to pick up any more work and going to look n apply for different jobs in the government sector. It's short staffed everywhere anyways in the public and private sector. Be sure you all take time to take care of yourselves since work doesn't care about you also you are replaceable anyways.
That’s pretty much it. This boss and company have driven me to the bone and I can’t take it anymore. My apartment lease ends in 3 weeks and I’ll be moving states and starting a new life and new job. I have so much stress from this job asking me to work 70+ hours a week for the same salary that I’ve cracked 2 teeth from grinding. It’s gonna be very freeing, but very scary dropping this notice off. I have a plan to record the convo I have. I feel such a mix of emotions tonight. I feel scared and happy and brave and relieved and terrified and like I could cry. I hope this goes well. This was the highest paying job I’ve ever had, and I’ll be taking a huge pay cut at any other job moving forward, but I think it’ll be worth it. Keep me…
AITA for quiting?
AITA for quiting my job one week before my scheduled 12 hour night shifts? So here it is. I work for a GC as a carpenter/foreman/laborer/learning to be a superintendent. I took a 7 dollar an hour pay cut when I got laid off from my union carpentry position with a different company 2 years ago. And I negotiated hard and got a 4 dollar raise at the beginning of the year. I told my boss I was thinking of quitting last Friday and he offered my 3 more dollars an hour but I know from my friends in the union that they just got another raise and would still be making between 4 and 7 dollars an hour more than me. Generally I seem to either do nothing most of the day or when they actually decide they need my carpentry/demo skills I bust my ass all day. Most…
Hoo rah townhall
My job leaders “we had tremendous productivity the last 3 years, and last year we had one of the best years for revenue ever” Meeting proceeds not 15 minutes to “What we have been doing with the work from home is not working. We need to build culture and the way we build culture is by all coming into the office to get that culture.” Some doggone hero had the gall to ask them “Instead of mandating a return to the office, what kinds of incentives have you considered to make it more attractive?” This c-level fatcat didn't even blink “You know just last week I unloaded the dishwasher. I told my wife hey honey I unloaded the dishwasher, and she says to me 'what? Do you want an award?'” … Seems like that fuck just equated unloading the dishwasher to coming into work, and let it slip that he…
-The development and progress in technology makes the 40 hour work week absolutely obsolete. It is backed up by science and research. -When 40 hours/week became a norm, one person worked, one stayed at home doing all housework, childcare, errands, everything. Now everyone works so we need time and energy for housework, errands, childcare, etc. -Before, people got free childcare at home. Mothers or family members would watch kids. Now both parents are working AND they have to earn more to pay for childcare. Nanny, daycare, etc. The 5 hours/day, 4 days/week, 20 hour weeks, will partially mitigate this. -Research and Science have shown again and again that people cannot be productive for 8-10 hours. It just doesn't work. So, how about we work the only hours that are actually productive. -We can sync working hours with school hours. So, people work while kids are at school. And when kids…
$35/hour and still broke
31 years of age now.. been working full time since I was 16 years old. Never had the privilege to “formally” educate myself.. I would go homeless otherwise. Rent is about $25k/year for my 800sqft apartment. There is no end to the abuse, I spent my whole 20s boot strapping and having faith in a system that only takes and does not give. I've never left my state once since I cannot afford a vacation, never been on vacation and have always chose to work since I would drown otherwise. I want my life “back” I don't even know what that means cause I've been sold a lie and I'm having trouble returning this propaganda. I'm afraid I'm going to snap any day now and just quit.. probably end up on the streets. It's obviously what I was destined to become. I hate it here, USA is a shit hole…
If this isn’t an advice sub, please direct me to a better place to ask this question. Ik you guys give lots of good advice, and this pay is kinda sketch. Maybe this should be in r/legaladvice ? TL;DR I’m getting paid $120 for 6 days of working in a kitchen and sleeping on the premises. That’s roughly $3.33/hour not including time required on-grounds but not working. My state minimum wage is $13.20. I’m told my pay is low because it includes food and room, but I’m in a tent (and not allowed to go home). How much money should I really be getting? I’m a 16 year old living in Oregon, and just applied to my first “real” job. It’s a position at a BSA Cub Scout camp, as kitchen staff. I’ll be staying at the camp 6 days a week for the three weeks I work there, I’m…
