I disagree with that statement wholeheartedly. Yes, I'm young, just really starting to get out there but older people telling me I'm “too young to get tired” just feels so demeaning. We're all people. And we all function a little differently. On top of my mental health I struggle in multiple ways. Someone telling me “your too young to get tired. If I could switch with you I would” just pisses me off. By all means, let's swap. You can have the mental health struggles and stress of my life. I work because I have bills to pay and I need income to survive in this world. But I'm not gonna let people who could care less about me run over me till my back breaks. Okay, both supervisors are out of town for the week. No other personnel are in office today (small team, around 8 of us with half out in the field, rest at home). I'm majoring in HR and I have quite some experience in the field. Your job offer and contract is based on the lowest wage possible according to labor laws and collective agreements. They might be adding little things here and there like a pizza party, but trust me, they want you to do as much as possible for as little as possible. Why do so many people allow this? Because it happens indirectly via a contract. Your boss isn't directly coming up to you like “listen buddy, I found this is the lowest I'm allowed to pay you, you're probably fine with it right?”. But he basically is telling this to you through your contract. How do you prevent this? Don't accept it. Negotiate your salary, PTO, and other secondary stuff.
