I’m on mobile while typing this. I’m just kinda sad that one of my managers (A) is turning into a yes woman for the company. She was really nice when she came on and she was hired as an employee at first. “A” was then hired as a manager when another manager got fired for showing up drunk and selling a car at the store. “A” was at first a really laid back manager. Let us listen to music on shifts, was lax on when we did the closing announcements (letting us do it 15 minutes before closing time; others have us do it 5 minutes before), and trusted us to do our sections. Now she’s on us constantly, doesn’t let us listen to music, and is strict on closing announcements. It sucks and I’m sad to see her turn into this. She’s only been with the company less than…
Month: July 2023
So I work mainly for a major tax company. And when tax season is over, I am put on break for 13+ weeks. Fine. Normally it would be me working on my schooling or stories or finding a way to entertain myself while I collect unemployment. It pays well enough to keep the bills and groceries but it's always tight. Like I have to make payment arrangments on some bills and let some slip till I get back. BUt this year…..motherfucker. So my state (Kentucky) passed a law cutting the unemployment back to 12 weeks as to the normal 26. See the problem? If they left the 26 alone, even if they upped the amount of jobs you needed to apply to the 5 now, I'd be fine. And I could use that time to be productive. Finish my master's degree, work towards sitting the CPA exam etc. But…
Question about a co-worker’s behavior
For background: I work in a public library, we’re almost all union, except for admin. I’m other words, nobody can be fired without following a long torturous bureaucratic process, so the behavior I’m about to describe can’t be about a need to cover one’s ass. I have a co-worker, a fellow department head, who has made it a habit to cc the deputy director when she has any kind of a conflict with a co-worker or if someone in another department makes a mistake that affects her work. For my part, if someone does something that I think is a mistake or a problem, I talk to them about it, without getting anyone else involved. Is her behavior as bitchy as I think it is?
Company gave me 3+ days for bereavement
Not a rant or anything. I lost my grandmother the other day, and my company gave me 3 days for bereavement, + additional time if I need it, paid. It’s a small win, but we take them when we can get them
I'm sick of snowbirds. I think about how once their generation dies, there won't be many snowbirds that can afford to live in 2 places throughout the year.
A Dallas postal worker died recently after a string of terrible management. (By the way if you can breathe and lie you’re USPS management material!) Across the nation management has falsified heat training, logging in and marking it complete for their carriers in what I assume is an osha violation. Then they became very anal about sitting anywhere for too long, issuing disciplinary action based on scanner data even though it’s against the NALC (city carrier’s) contract this carrier that passed away had worked at the post office 30+ years. To my knowledge he never had any disciplinary action up to the point he had his stationary event. Knowing any rational person 30yrs into a career risking wages, job, benefits etc. I have no doubt that’s what pushed him past his limits and it needs to be in every paper and news outlet across the nation. PEOPLE ARE MORE IMPORTANT…
So the owner of the restaurant I work at has been doing this thing in the last couple years where he closes for one week in order for management and back-of-house to get their annual week off without having to be short staffed (it’s a smaller, family-owned place). I took a two week trip in June and asked that my PTO be used while I was gone, to which he gave a tepid “ok, sure.” When I got back I saw these days were not added to my paycheck, and when asked about it he said he’d put it toward the week when we’re closed. My thing is, isn’t PTO for employees to use at our discretion? Like, I didn’t choose to be off this week, this isn’t the same as me putting in a vacation request. If the owner closes their business for a week to go out of…
