How do you reply to someone that says comparing today’s wages of the past is like comparing apples and oranges. Here are the 4 main arguments I see but am not sure how to respond: 1. Comparing COL today with earlier in the 20th century is cherry picking benefits and downsides since life expectancy was much lower in the recent past. 2. If people live in smaller cities/towns as they did 50/70 years ago then cost of living is lower. 3. The wages of the 50’s-70’s in the US were inflated relative to the world since we did not have the damage to infrastructure that other countries did so we had a relative increase in wealth and ability that has since been more evenly distributed across the world. 4. Population is much higher in the US so obviously things would be more expensive than they were when there was less…

A Call for Help
I never thought it'd come to this, but I'm asking for help on the internet. Hear me out, please. I'm interviewing for a job tomorrow and I want to continue being a stay-at-home Dad. I'm currently building a business and I fear that I will lose all hope and desire to continue this with having to return to work. August will make one year since I left my job in pursuit of this dream. I honestly fear that the despair I get at a mundane 9-5 will crush me into giving up on everything I've worked so hard to build and achieve so far. My wife has been begging for work, but cannot find anything, remote or otherwise. She's been a stay at home Mom for three years now and wants to make money. She had a college degrees, as well and would like to use it, if possible. We…
I declined a one-way interview…
I declined a one-way interview for a management role. I wrote back to the recruiter stating that I prefer to speak with the hiring manager about the role so I can ask questions. The recruiter said that if I do well, then I get to move on to an interview with the head of HR… I have been a hiring manager. My hiring philosophy, if you really want a candidate, you freaking roll out the red carpet and hire the person. They walked… I feel accomplished for not bowing down to some impersonal system. Has anyone else gone through this, what are your thoughts?
Searching for another job
Hey everyone, I currently hate the job I'm at and am looking for a new job. I am a great employee/lead and my manager loves having me on. I do like my manager quite a bit, but I don't enjoy my work or coworkers anymore. I also am not allowed to work from home and I feel underpaid. Should I tell my manager I'm looking for another job in the hopes of getting a raise or any extra leverage? Thank you!:
Hi everyone! I had a bit of a pickle on a post about a sensitive subject: a woman getting confessed by her boss. To be honest I absolutely didn't see the problem with such situation as he confessed, got rejected, and took the rejection. I understood people saying “be careful” or similar but tons of people were really creeped out by the situation, calling that sexual harrassment, saying to change job and take a lawyer, reporting to HR and else. I asked about and lots of people were quite rude and abrasive on the subject. Some were kind enough to take the time to discuss calmly and I finally understood the problem. Guess what? The problem wasn't me, it wasn't them, it was just a cultural thing. I'm French and believe me when I say asking an employee out when you're a manager or a boss is 100%…
How to defeat an HR clock in/out app
It's an app on my phone and I need to use it to clock in and out everyday. It tracks who's late and can be used to apply for leave or whatnot. I tried using GPS spoofing (non root) on my Android phone, but the app instantly detected it. Now I plan to leave a secondary phone at work, and AirDroid in from my primary phone to clock in, in case I'm late. It also doesn't mind that I have my GPS turned off when I'm not using it. Does anybody have a better idea?
My Boss thinks she is immune to the law
I (23m) have been working at a “family-run” Italian market now for 8 months. I know that these locally-owned businesses can be just as bad as corporate ones, but I had hoped for better than I got. What I found within a week of working there, is a massive array of labor law violations with blatant disregard for the people working there. The first sign came when a week into my being there, I was publically shamed with a photo attached to the pin board. On it was a threat of “time off my clock”. I was not provided with a lunch break, and I work from mid-afternoon to 10 pm, so I have to eat at the register when there are no customers around. I had just graduated college, having gotten my bachelor's degree in what comes down to a mix of sociology and psychology. I know realistically, it…
Got fired today because of boundaries
I got fired today from a certain cookie company. The reasoning was a shift lead messaged me with reprimands on my day off. I felt and feel it is unprofessional and not fair. Those conversations should be handled when I am clocked in and accountable. They expect a lot of unpaid work and I know that is illegal. I’m just so frustrated and disappointed.

Ever since I joined the workforce, I can't enjoy the 4th of July anymore whenever it falls on Sunday – Thursday. It's the biggest national holiday in the USA. It's during summer. It involves lots of drinking, eating, and staying up late watching fireworks. And yet I can't enjoy any of it because it just feels like a glorified Sunday to me. All I've felt all day is the Sunday blues, dreading the fact I gotta get up early tomorrow so I can be depressed about having to go to work. I literally don't care about this holiday anymore.
