My coworker (she is the same position as me hair receptionist gets paid the same she’s 40 I’m 23) So she makes our schedule because it’s just two of us instead of our manager (she can’t manage anything for shit) Long story short Kellen was suppose to take Friday-Sunday off for a family trip but last minute changed it to Saturday-Monday knowing I can’t open the hair salon because I have school. I have been working for a telephone center for 8 months now, in the sales department. Today they announced us that the center will be closed for a week in August, because 15/8 is a big religious holiday for Orthodox Christians and nobody will be willing to have a serious conversation leading to a sale. So far so good, The problem is that they are making us use our personal earned vacation days (4, to be precise). Which creates a problem for me because I have made vacation plans a week prior that and my vacation days are not enough to do both. When I talked to my supervisor, she told me that this is something that all of us will be doing and that she can’t do anything about it. Full disclosure I live on on Lond Island, NY so cost of living is embarrassingly high. Their starting wage is $16.48 which is paltry. Target/While Foods/Harbor Freight in town start 16 year olds at $17. The ad I answered said hours would vary but to be available Monday-Thursday from 9-530 and Friday 9-1. I called to cancel my interview and reveied a rude message this morning that this is only a part time job and if I expect more I should look for full time work. You are quoting people to be available for what would be the bulk of full time work. Additionally this is an 18+ job in a warehouse freezer that they are seeking year round work for. Maybe you can get that from a college student in a pinch but in what Long Island 2023 world would you expect full time availability for a part time…

I disagree with that statement wholeheartedly. Yes, I'm young, just really starting to get out there but older people telling me I'm “too young to get tired” just feels so demeaning. We're all people. And we all function a little differently. On top of my mental health I struggle in multiple ways. Someone telling me “your too young to get tired. If I could switch with you I would” just pisses me off. By all means, let's swap. You can have the mental health struggles and stress of my life. I work because I have bills to pay and I need income to survive in this world. But I'm not gonna let people who could care less about me run over me till my back breaks. The expectations work places have for you are many of times unrealistic. And older co-workers coming at you with their “words of wisdom” sure…
