Dealing with an inexperienced co-worker
I work at a startup in a lab as a manager/lead, with 10 years of experience in my field. About 4-5 months ago, we started searching to fill a new role, and my boss contacted an old colleague of his from a previous company to apply for the position. My boss spoke highly of him, praising his intelligence, capabilities, work ethic, etc. However, during the interview, I noticed that his colleague lacks the necessary skills and experience we require for the role. His expertise lies in a different area (with more than 20 years in the workforce), and he has basic knowledge of our field. I advised my boss against hiring him since training him would be a big burden to our team, especially when there were other more suitable candidates and we are drowned with priority projects and never-ending to-do lists. Fast forward to today, the individual has been…
Hi all, I have an issue and I’m not sure how to feel about it. I recently received an offer letter for a full time position at a company I’ve been with for awhile. I’m currently working hourly part time. I’m happy, but not with the compensation. I’ve been offered (with calculation), $10 less an hour than I currently make which shakes out to almost $20k less a year than if they were basing my salary off of my current hourly rate. So they want more work for less money? I’d basically be making the same amount per paycheck but with 10-20 hours more work per week. Yes, I’d get access to a little bit more PTO and medical insurance (that I believe I have to pay for). But realistically id make more money staying part time and doing another job on the side. How do I approach this?
Never fall for a sign up bonus
I got a job in transportation management a little while ago and was let go a few months later. Those things are only there to entice you to accept a position that keeps the company going. I got about less than an hours worth of training. The job itself would have been pretty easy if they didn't require me to take on multiple different tasks that should have been filled by someone else. I was essentially doing four or five critical roles that made doing the actual job impossible.
Loudly quit folks. Hide nothing.
I see many comments here from lower-wage people saying they want to move to Europe because it is so much better. Now if you want to move for the culture, history and the wonderful people, great! That's the reason to move to Europe. However if you want to move just to “get free stuff” that you don't get in the U.S., maybe read this article. (was not behind a paywall for me) https://www.wsj.com/articles/europeans-poorer-inflation-economy-255eb629 A few highlights: *Since 2008 Americans have grown richer while Europeans have grown poorer. *Private consumption declined 1% since 2019 in the EU and has risen almost 9% in the U.S. *A 33-year old nurse was shopping at the half-price-meat and said “you almost need to work 2 jobs to survive”. “In Brussels, one of Europe’s richest cities, teachers and nurses stood in line on a recent evening to collect half-price groceries from the back of a…
Gen Z is headed for a career calamity
Time off request
I requested several days off (my first mistake – should have notified) a month ago (two months in advance) and was told my manager couldn’t approve the request at this time since she has an important meeting on one of the days that she might need me to attend. Then, she said the meeting is so important she typically asks her reports to be in the building whether or not they are attending the meeting (I’m not sure why.) I followed up via email today and got no response. I suspect my manager wants to talk about it in person tomorrow and avoid putting it in writing that she is rejecting my request. Is it confrontational to ask that the decision be put into writing?
Robbed by my bosses
So last paycheck my bosses stole like 200$ from me by retroactively changing the time and a half policy for covering shifts there by shorting my check as a result. There was no prior notice that this was going to happen and it's left me feeling depressed about my job lately. Well I have the day off today so I got a little too drunk last night, and I woke up feeling Hella depressed and down on myself. For one I was gonna use that money to pay for more dental work now that money is just gone and my bosses probably feel no remorse about it. Well today a coworker called me up to cover for him and I said “I was too depressed to eat I didn't think I could make it”. Well then my one boss called me, left a voice mail, and texted me twice before…
