I am a hybrid worker but my boss forces me to be in the office when he’s away

So this may sound like I'm moaning but this is an issue that really bothers me. I work 2 days a week in office and 3 at home. My usual schedule is out, in, out, in, out. We are a small team of only 6 people, with a director who also works in the day to day operations. However, this director is very often taking random days off (not working at all) and also long holidays. He has this weird obsession that when he is not working actively on that day that ALL the other employees must come into the office. Sometimes he gives just 1 day notice and says ''im off tomorrow, so you should be in the office instead of at home”. It doesn't matter if you normally do Wednesday at home for example in your regular schedule. If he's decided he's not going to be working that…

Just existing at work.

Hello everyone, first post here, I just got hired by an IT company and right from the start everything is just scummy and sucks. The damn contract has a clause that if I terminate the contract or they terminate the contract for just cause I need to repay them the training they provided up to a minimum of 4K euros or more. And now I'm currently 2 days in on the job during the 30 day experimental phase and I haven't done anything. 1st day: Showed up on time, wasn't greeted by anyone. Quick chat with my supposed supervisor, got a desk and a computer, got my email credentials and that was it. I spent the whole day in front of the computer without any tasks from 9 to 18. Whenever I requested tasks I was told to wait and be patient. 2nd day/Today: Got a morning meeting with the…

I don’t know what’s better or worse

So I had a substance issue that was thrown into throttle by the pandemic. I’ve been WFH for 3 years in a big city but small apt. After 3 years I started to go a bit crazy and using a bit much. So upon intervention my fiancé said either go back to work or I’m leaving. She goes into office 5 days a week for the past year. Easy choice right? So I go to work, back to office, 3 days a week. But good lord…I don’t know what’s worse, the isolationism of being alone at home for 3 years or the isolationism of being back in the office in a bull pen. I mean the process of going in is marginally better than staying at home and blurring lines of home and work, but Jesus Christ on a motor bike, the psychology of cubicles and a windowless existence for…

Diplomacy vs Filing a Complaint

I work at a warehouse adjusting and replenishing the company's retail store inventory. I work at a desk. In regards to me I don't take my unpaid 30min lunch but instead work through the whole 8hr day. My state lets employees waive their right to an unpaid 30min lunch as long as we work in a place that allows for regular breaks and use of bathroom facilities. They won't let me do this bc of concern for “our safety and health” which bs bc they have no issues making us come in during inclement weather while upper management works at home. I've also worked hard manual labor for the past 20yrs so I know when/if I need a break. At this place I definitely don't. So they respond with a bogus made up on the spot policy. It's laughable how obvious it I that my supervisor wrote it himself. So…

How would you respond to this situation?

Been looking for a job for sometime now and decided to change my approach on LI. Rather than just applying to advertised jobs, I thought of reaching out to CEO’s/Founders through the message and direct chat option. The idea was to reach out to new startups within the AI field, since the opportunity there is quite high. I found a report that listed out the top 10 AI startups by industry and used that to set up my message. Started off by congratulating the CEO on being listed in the report etc etc and positioned myself as someone who could help them given that I’m unemployed and looking for interesting roles and look forward to connecting The funny part is one CEO wrote back and instead of acknowledging the actual request, or talk about roles in the company, inquired directly ”which report are you referring to? Can you kindly share…

PSA: If you’re feeling incredibly nihilistic and negative, consider taking a break from this sub.

Or social media in general. I know it helps to be surrounded by like-minded people and be able to rant about work, but make sure you keep in mind the damage this can cause to your mental health. I'm not saying to quit this sub or social media or Reddit altogether, but consider taking a break and use the time to exercise, watch a TV show, take a nap, etc.

Work wants more notice for summer leave but 2 week notice to quit is fine

I'm planning to hike the Continental Divide trail next year. I asked at work how much notice they would want before I left and they preferred to know months in advance. Sure I'm ten months early now, but I can't shake the feeling that it's odd how they'll accept 2 week quit notice but want much more when I want to take an extended leave of absence. From their point of view, isn't a 5 month leave of absence like I was quitting anyways, just that the “re-hiring” is perhaps expedited? Or would they want to know months in advance if I was quitting but they can't do much about that one but feel like they can bargain with a leave of absence? I was already considering moving and thus finding a different job anyways when I finish my hike, so I don't feel much obliged to them. Tl;dr Why…
