60% of tip going to Subway?

I stopped by a Subway for lunch today, there was one guy working alone at around 2 pm so I put in a 20% tip when I checked out. I just happened to ask him if he got to keep all of it or it was somehow split, thinking it might be split between everyone working that day or something. Nope. Turns out Subway keeps 60% of the tips, he also said he gets taxed extra on the tips which I'm assuming is true since he's not categorized as wait staff or something, I'm not sure how that works. But is this common practice?
