This all seems illegal; US Labor law question

I just spoke to a fast food worker who told me that they were given benefits (only after 5 years of working at a franchised fast food place). And that the owner won’t let them take time off, claim or use their PTO. I don’t know labor law very well, but that is absolutely illegal, right? This is in the US, for context. I’m trying to get resources in order for this person, who I think might be living out of their car idk it makes me so mad. I know they don’t have time to look into this themselves and I’ve been slowly building “labor-ish” relationships with the staff at this chain caffeinated beverage place, if you catch my drift.
