I just got promoted to department management, I wanted to thank you guys for venting here as often as you do. Its given me some ideas on how to better my department.
I've come up with a few rules that should help
- Never treat your employees as anything less than human. This means having empathy and working with them on a personal basis listening and acting on concerns that they have
2 Dont let employees get disrespected. Stand up for your employees. Where I am my employees consistantly deal with being berated. I've told them if this happens get me immediately I'll deal with the situation. Nobody deserves to be talked down to especially if it's a situation that cant be changed. I know my tolerance for abuse and I'd rather take the heat instead of seeing someone else suffer.
-
Create a welcoming enviroment. I want my employees to be able to come to me with anything without fear of repercussions. Be it critiques, complaints or even getting something stressing them out off their chest, my door will always be open and I will be a transparent as possible.
-
Do not demand work of them beyond what they are capable of. Ask if needed but if told no do not dwell on it do not badger or bug or threaten. People do not need to be overworked just for profit.
5, Be understanding. Were all human we all have lifes outside of work. People have bad days , be it getting sick or loss of family or anything in between. Be lenient on anything that allows it. Were all just trying to get by in life
- Dont be someone who manages from a desk, lead from the front. If I'm the manager I should be working with my staff whenever possible. Be an actual leader and guide them when needed. Leading from the front also allows you to see from their perspective.
Do you guys have any more advice for me? I wanna be someone people enjoy working with even if we all dont enjoy working. We all suffer in this together and maybe I can help lessen the suffering.
