I just quit a job I was about to start. Pay was min wage and I was okay with it since I'm in school. I don't know if it's the effects of being in this sub or just my experience with min wage workplaces, but I immediately got out of my seat in the office when owner says before I get paid an hourly wage there is a mandatory 2 week training online for a “couple hours” a day, which I'll get a $100 stipend for. I'm usually shy and have a tendency to be a passive yes-man! I did not STUTTER this time. I asked why do they think it's okay to pay a non-contractual employee less than min wage for mandatory training. They had no good answer. I left and called labour board omw home lol. I will see what happens now.
Point of this wasn't to vent but to encourage everyone to not be complacent in their own exploitation. eventhough in my case an unpaid training for a couple of weeks is not the hardest thing in the world, it was telling of their principle.
