how is getting paid “minimum wage” not enough to sustain a family anymore?

once upon a time, people were able to actually live off relatively lower wages right? why is that not true anymore? what changed and how? why can’t most people working minimum wage afford the average 1 bedroom rent in their city? why do i hear that businesses would crumble if they paid their workers a living wage? i genuinely don’t understand and am looking for answers
