Been at my company almost 3 years. No benefits offered my first year.
Second year, BIG deal made of new options, especially 401k. Documents have pages of detail about employer contributions – matching, vesting for profit sharing, etc. None of those kick in until you hit 24 months with company. OK.
Hit 24 months. Ask about matching. They say “Oh no, we don't match. It's just vesting and profit sharing. Kicks in when you leave the company.”
Now I'm leaving. Ask about my vesting status and they reply “That's only for profit sharing, which is at our discretion, and we haven't paid out any of that in years.”
Seriously there are pages and pages of math they ask us to do around our qualification status just to turn around and say “It's discretionary and it's always zero”????? The plan document they keep referring me back to is literally named the 401(k) Profit Sharing Summary Plan Description.
This just feels like fake benefits. They did this with healthcare too. (We have plans that are ACA approved [they weren't]. You can join our healthcare plan [you can only learn about the plan during a 7 day enrollment window in February].)
