Sorry for formatting and spelling I’m on mobile. So I work at a hospital as a Hospitalist PA for the past 3.5 years, at least I used too. Over the past 2 years or so our census has been low since COVID and one of the services that consulted us left the hospital. Because of this the private internal medicine group I worked for wanted me to starting working for the hospital proper, the plan was to start running an observation unit (which hadn’t been created yet) and I would staff pts with the private group, aka they still make money.
However, this fell through when the CEO of the group (also my direct boss) changed what he wanted which was unrealistic and impossible based on the whole census of the hospital. Despite this he kept pushing the hospital to take me on full time and they caved telling him I would start Nov. 1st. I got an email from the CFO of the private group asking when my last day was, I had bo idea as no one had even mentioned anything to me. I told her as much and she apologized. I then got an email the next morning at 7am from my old boss (the CEO) who said he had gotten off the phone late the night before and that my start date would be Nov. 1st. No one from HR called me about anything, not the position itself, compensation, or benefits. I had asked why no one had talked to me and sent a nice email thanking him for teaching me (he didn’t really) and for giving me the opportunity to grow and help patients. The only thing he said back was “talk to the hospital about that”. That upset me like I put in years of hard work, late nights and early mornings providing compassionate care and I can’t even get a thank you?
Anyway, I was in contact with the NP at the hospital who was working on the position who is also a friend. She said that everything was set and that I would start by doing PICC lines/Mid-lines and that my responsibilities would evolve over the course of the next few months and would likely include the obs unit as before. The CMO and CEO of the hospital approved everything and I was set to start again on the 1st. However, HR still hadn’t called me about anything. On the 31st of Oct. she told me that I wasn’t gonna start on the 1st as corporate had to approve the position first. So I was screwed.
Meanwhile, my last day of work was Oct. 21st as I thought I was starting on the 1st and didn’t want to work 12 days in a row, we usually worked a week on week off. So I had to go on unemployment but I do work contingent at the health clinic at my old university but it isn’t enough to pay the bills. My wife also quit her job 3 months ago after years of suffering emotionally/mentally from her job as a foster care supervisor, we had no idea I’d be out of a job.
Because of this financials are tight and we don’t have health insurance, which my wife needs as she gets biologic injections every 6 weeks for bad ulcerative colitis. I’ve applied a bunch of places and have had some great interviews and been told I’d get some offers this week but it’s still stressful especially noting being able to provide for my wife and I. Had to go to a food bank last weekend too and after all this not one word from the hospital. Companies don’t care about you or about patients, you’re just a number to make them money. I just want to get back to caring for patients and doing what I love.
