What time do you actually start working/stop working?

At a previous work place the culture became your shift starts at 08:30 which means you should be logged on to your computer BY 08:30 and working at that time, meaning you’d need to be at your desk by 08:25. Finish was at 17:30 which meant you stopped working at that time then logged off meaning you didn’t leave until 17:35. I now work in a place where I start at 06:00 and finish at 18:00 and there is a night shift so effectively there will be 10 minutes of downtime whilst the opposite shift logs out and packs up and I log in. I make a point to walk in the door at 05:59 and log out at 17:55. Just curious what the cultures are for others? How you play it and what kinda balance there is?
