Sitting in a 1.5hr all staff meeting, thanking the lord that I’m a remote worker, and wondering why this isn’t 30min and an email instead.
They had people look around the room and talk to someone they don’t normally work with, and discuss their favorite holiday traditions. Then they had a very quick update to let everyone know they aren’t getting as big a bonus. Then very quickly followed up by teams recognizing those who’ve done great work this month…and some of the people are actually crying. Yes, they are crying because they are thanking someone for doing their job, and that person is also crying…wtf!? Then of course a slide showing everyone’s birthdays and work anniversaries, queue the game golf clapping and clapping emojis.
As a project manager this shit is so infuriating, all these people have work that is due before the holiday and we are behind. But not to worry, we found out what Susan likes to do with her family for Christmas and the executive assistant put together a really great PowerPoint for all of us to ignore.
This is the office culture they keep talking about and why you have to spend $100 a week in gas and sit at a cubicle. Upper management actually gets excited about this crap, because it’s the only time they talk like they care about the workers…1x per month. I’ve turned off my camera and started scrolling Reddit 10min in and I bet nothing I miss will affect my ability to do work in anyway.
