Conflicted Non-Profit Boss

I'm curious how this sub feels about a situation I'm in. I recently was elevated to being the Director of pf a small non-profit museum (1 full-time staff and 4 part-time) after being our curator for the previous 5 years. We have one of our biggest and most important fundraisers of the year starting the weekend after Thanksgiving. It's an annual town tradition that goes back far before my tenure at the museum. It takes a handful of people to run including staff and volunteers. When I went to discuss the planning and schedule of that weekend, several weeks ago, two of my most important employees told me they had made travel plans and can't be there. I'm empathetic to the situation, as I don't reallt want to be there the weekend of the Thanksgiving either, but the success of this fundraiser literally helps keep the museum open and our board has certain expectations for us being open those days. I approved the time off time off, but part of me feels super left out to dry having an already stressful situation for me made worse. Am I in the wrong here?
