Is work supposed to be interesting?

I have been working for almost 6 years now in the field of civil engineering, making decent money ($100k+bonus). I don't know if I like what I do, but I have the most knowledge in this field since I haven't tried something completely different. Sometimes I really get into it since the nature of the problem I am trying to fix is interesting. But usually it's the same routine design. In the company we have had a gazillion turn overs in the past 2-3 years… Not sure where everyone is going lol .. but due to these turnovers, their projects are usually distributed amongst current employees… As a result I end up getting a lot of their projects which are annoying and frankly frustrating because they were not left in good shape, budget and technical wise.. so today my supervisor (who I have a great relationship with) asked how am…

And we have had this discussion many times…my answers generally skew towards the “okay” spectrum or it sucks (due to the people who left and their work dumped on me)… I feel like I am just working to put out fires and getting the projects completed as fast as possible with out working overtime. .. I do what is needed and nothing more.. but my supervisor believes I need to be more than just “okay” about work since I spend most of my day at work. I kind of agree with her since their is no denying that we spend most of our working life well working… I responded that I would like to focus more on things outside of work such as hobbies or spending time with friends and family… I don't expect work to provide me satisfaction with life , I only see it as a means to an end… Please help me understand if people actually find their work interesting and if I should try to be interested in work… I don't know what's the right way..
