I took a job away from freelance because I need health benefits for my child.
The pay is $1 over minimum wage to clean hotel rooms. I knew this going into it. I didn't know how short staffed they were. Some days there are only 2 cleaners for the entire hotel.
Yesterday, the hotel had 49 check outs and something like 20 stay overs.The total number of cleaners? Four. It was hours straight of literal running to get done. We each did the work of two people and all of us were in pain today. One an average clean, it should take about 40 minutes a room. The time allowed was 10.
You'd think the supervisors would be pleased with us. Nope. She trailed around us today complaining about every little thing. And, because we pulled together yesterday and cleaned an unreasonable amount of rooms, she was pissed off we were slower today. She told me they were going to get a stopwatch to time how long we were taking in a room.
How the hell do they see this as reasonable? I'm actually speechless tonight when I think about it, especially after the other day. My bigger question is how do people stay? I need benefits badly but….. I feel so exploited and every day I lose a bit more dignity.
