I moved from CO to NM 6 months ago. I updated my address with my employer and my W4 to show that I live in NM. It’s Dec and my state taxes are STILL being deducted for CO. I had emailed payroll in Sept, Oct, Nov with no reply until last Friday.
The payroll person (contractor) told me 3 times that they’d update my state deductions to NM for December but I’d need to consult my accountant for the months prior. (Who the fuck has an accountant?) I pushed back and back until the contractor said they’d add $1230 to my 12-15-22 paycheck and then when I file my taxes in April for CO I’d pay that return back to my company.
I’m trying to understand what kind of asinine solution that is. It sounds shady and possibly illegal to me. I have the number for the NM tax office and the IRS as well so I can get some guidance.
I believe the payroll person is incompetent and is shirking responsibility. I’m thinking of some follow up questions to see why they’d suggest that. I passed this issue onto my managers and they’re supposed to follow up with me in the next few days but I don’t have much faith in them.
Has anyone experienced this type of egregious mishandling of payroll, specifically taxes? What’d you do and what do you think the recourse is in this instance?
