Just for fun, my fiancé and I bartend at this local craft beer place on saturdays. We have a pretty small town with few options for entertainment, so we were up there a lot so we decided hey, why don't we get paid if we're going to be up here all the time? Our normal jobs are her being a teacher and me being the IT guy for the school district. We have worked there for 6 months now.
Recently, we have been in the process of ownership change. We just threw them a going away party last Friday. It was the first Saturday of ownership change and to say the new manager micromanages would be an understatement. Comes up there once or twice a shift just to check on us like we haven't been working unsupervised for months. The first thing she did as new manager was take away the employee discount. We have always had a policy of our official hours being noon to 8pm but If there are still plenty of people we stay open.
Well its 8pm and I haven't had a customer in an hour. We worked out a deal with the previous owner that if we don't make $100 in credit card tips we take 100 plus any cash tips in exchange for deep cleaning for the health department inspections. So I have had enough time to complete all that and shut the place down by 8:15. I'm literally taking the trash out and locking the door when she comes by and asks what I'm doing. I tell her it's 8pm and we haven't had any customers so I'm closing. She says no no no now we close at 10pm on Friday and Saturday. She hasn't told anyone this. So I told her she can stay open until 10 if she wants to but I'm leaving. As I'm walking to my truck she mentions that she is looking at changing the pay format for everyone and seeing what the state bartender wage is, as in canceling our current arrangement and paying us $2.63/hr or whatever server wage is plus tips. It took everything in me not to quit right there.
