Wondering if this is legal. Recruiter “asks” us not to discuss wages

Wondering if this wording is trying to tiptoe around laws that prevent this kind of stuff. Since ask seems to be intentionally worded on their part. The exact phrase in the email was “I ask you to not discuss your wage with anyone at work”
