We are very cognizant of our collective power as workers, but seemingly not as debtors. If a large enough national or international movement of people simply striked and stopped paying their student debts, banks and the system at large would be forced to listen to demands. You can tank one persons credit, but you can't tank the credit of 20% of your population without it being actively counter intuitive. I'd also like to remind you graduates are demographically the backbone of the banking system in other regards as well. They are more likely than the average person to operate on credit, even beyond school.
The fact this hasn't already happened could be attributed to deliberate efforts to silence the idea, but as someone with student debt , I still feel its unproductive to complain about any problem I can do something about, especially when me not paying adds to the pool of people taking this position and our collective power.
Is there something I'm missing? If not, I feel we have a collective responsibility to spread this idea, ideally in a non partisan way, due to the sheer amount of undue suffering and exploitation it could save millions from.
