My job is crap. We’ve been working short staffed for nearly the entire year. We only get paid 10.00 with only a select few days of holiday pay. Recently as I am the senior worker here of nearly six years I have been taking it upon myself to try and advocate for the workers at the store all 3 of us. We work at a privately owned Shell gas station. The current owners are on their way out but I’m confident that things will only potentially get worse with the new owners coming in. I have been butting heads with the current owners for nearly two months over things ranging from breaking $100 bills when we simply don’t have the funds in our till to actually enforcing our public bathroom shut down after a certain time in the evening. We shut them down cause of the drug problem in the area but keeping getting told “don’t deny them if they buy something I don’t care if just a pack of gum.”
Things are getting really out of hand as recently an employee got threatened on the job and they’re siding with customer that threatened her saying it was the employees fault for the situation. It was not I was there for the entire situation and had to jump in to defend her. Thankfully as a guy I was able to diffuse the situation then.
I am just getting entirely burnt out with the constant bs and Mississippi has shit for worker protection laws. I was wondering at this rate would be worth trying to unionize the station(if so how do I go about it?) or should I just look for another place and jump off this sinking ship?
