Job interviews alone give me heartburn and taking time out of my day off is a big deal. Whether I get the job or not isn’t a big deal but I do keep an eye out for how the person respects me during the process. It gives me good insight into the culture and what to expect. I did a phone interview and lady was very excited to have me come in for a physical interview.
At this point it is usually a formality along with onboarding after a brief talk to make sure I exist and can hold a conversation. I fill out a background check and physical job application. So today including the round trip and time spent in the office I’m giving about an hour and a half to these people. The lady even asked me to bring stuff for onboarding. I finish filling out paperwork and she tells me I’m free to go. Color me confused wondering why I brought stuff and even came in when I could’ve done this electronically. Says they will reach out and not 3 hours later I’m told I didn’t get the job. Totally fine but why did I waste my time then? I send this as a response.
Recruiter,
I also appreciate you speaking with me and understand your decision. What I struggle to wrap my head around is why you felt it appropriate to have me travel a cumulative 40 minutes on my day off to fill out paperwork that could’ve been done electronically just to turn around a few hours later and tell me I didn’t get the job. I am grateful for the opportunity to share my experience and ultimately glad things did not work out because I do not want to try and imagine the collective substantial loss that is time your employees will never get back because of business practices like the one I mentioned above.
Moral of the story is don’t settle for giving your free time away for free. I don’t expect a lot just don’t waste my time for a job that’s part time.
