Hey guys, I need some advice on whether I should quit my current job before I line up a new job.
To provide you with context to my reasoning for wanting to quit (skip to TLDR section if it's too long – I just need to get this shit off my chest):
My coworker who I got along with really well recently quit, and I was promoted to her position (we basically had the same job – she just had the senior position, whereas I had the junior position). I was expecting a higher salary because I would be taking on a lot more work if I accepted that offer. My coworker who quit also informed me about how much she was making when they first hired her and how much she was making before she quit. The amount wasn't great but it was still better than mine, and I thought I'd be able to negotiate a higher salary because it would be a smooth transition from my current position to the new position. The only difference is that I would be taking on more work.
On my first day of work after my coworker quit, my HR presented me with a new contract highlighting some of the key responsibilities and expectations for that position. My new salary was also included in that contract. I was extremely disappointed when I saw the new salary because it was not only less than what my previous coworker was making before she first started as a new hire for that position, but it was basically only a $1/hour raise from my current salary. I felt like I was just punched in the gut and was extremely disappointed and pissed. The HR must have noticed my expression because she began to reassure me that they would most likely increase my salary (to what it really should be) after 3 months. Her excuse was that they wanted to evaluate my performance for the first 3 months before reevaluating my salary (This was probably what my manager asked her to say). I am now basically doing two jobs for the price of 1….and I don't think I can wait around for another 3 months for a salary increase that's not guaranteed.
After that meeting I went home and cried myself to sleep for two days like an idiot because I felt like they put a value on my worth and this number was embarrassing low. This also hurt my self esteem because I know I'm worth so much more than that…
Needless to say I am going to start applying for new jobs. However, a part of me wants to screw over the company by handing in my 2 week notice at the beginning of next week, because the office will be closed for the Week of December 25th due to the holidays. This means that I would only have to work one week before saying goodbye and moving on.
TLDR; I got a promotion at work for a senior position in my department because my coworker quit. I was expecting a higher salary, but ended up getting less than what my previous coworker started with when she was freshly hired and my raise only totals to about an extra $1/hour. I have to wait another 3 months before they reevaluate my performance and potentially increase my salary to what it really should be… Should I just hand in my 2 week notice early next week because the office will be closed for one of those weeks due to the holidays. Which means they have 1 week to find someone new so that I can train them…
My only concern is that I currently do not have a new job line up yet, and may not be able to find a new job right away. I have enough savings to last about 8 months being unemployed but I'm not sure if it's worth taking the risk.
I'm curious to know what your thoughts are and if you have any advice for me.
