Years ago I was working as a desk clerk for The Holiday Inn. I think I was there maybe 2 months or so. I remember a lady who worked there for years (she was one of the managers), came up to me and said “Just so you know, this job is ALL about personality! That’s how you make it here.”
And I couldn’t help but think to myself, ‘what personality? The one you deem acceptable and approve of?’. Like to me it was a weird statement to make. What I consider “personality” may not be what you consider personality and vice versa. And I remember she was so hyped up and acted like this was a job of a lifetime with the way she spoke, as if I was trying out to be in a movie or some really cool position no one could get where YES a fun, interesting, unique and talented personality is key. It was a freaking desk clerk job….
I still think about how weird the whole situation was. LOL. And no the job had nothing to do with personality. It was no different than working in any retail job. We had major asshole customers and ironically enough, everyone who worked there was super boring and rude to me, no one had this “special personality” she spoke of. Unless she meant being a dick to people (hence why I left after 2 months, I was too nice and got bullied very badly by one of my higher ups.)
Anyone remember weird things someone said to you at work that just stays with you because it was so bizarre?
