Employer didn’t tell me there wasn’t work and hasn’t called back

My question is my boss has to tell me that I’m fired ? They can just ghost me and make me think I still have a job yet I haven’t worked? I’ve been off since the 24th Christmas Eve and I was expecting to work today.
