PSA to hourly folks: If your boss texts you about work stuff outside of your shift and you respond, that’s unpaid labor

I didn't believe a lot of the texts I saw on here about bosses texting employees about shit and y'all responding…ew who responds first of all? Then I found out at my job that one of the bosses does text their employees all the damn time…and they respond!! Go to HR and demand compensation and for the unethical behavior to stop. An actual professional workplace will you an email system that you can log into while at work. I don't care if it's a tiny mom/pop shop, they can leave you a note for when you're getting paid. Second, if you get paid hourly. Once you're off the clock, you don't have to think about work. Second, if you get paid hourly. Once you're off the clock, you don't have to think about work. If it's a quick, “Wanna pickup a shift? text then sure why not, but when it's about work stuff, about scheduling, about accommodations etc, that all needs to be paid for. Your boss can email you at the company email and you can respond on company time.

All ya gotta say, if you want to say anything at all.

“I will respond to this work matter while at work.”

Or

“Please send this my work email and I will respond as soon as I can.”

If they give you pushback, you can ask if they will compensate this conversation since it is work related? “Am I being paid to respond to this work request at my typical hourly rate? How do I submit this conversation in our time clock system to be reimbursed properly so I may address your work related request during a non-working hour?”

I'd love to see more people doing this. Stop texting your boss so much, even if it's a 2 minute chat, your brain is now in work-mode and that takes a while to switch out of. Also it adds up over the years, you deserve your money.
