someone in another sub advised me to post here for feedback. i’m a 1099 contractor for a small company. here are some points that might be important. i get paid $17/hour via zelle. i go into their store for my job, which includes sewing, alterations, making clothes, etc. they give me tasks and specify how they want it done they would not allow me to work ft hours and recently they cut my hours to 2 days/week which means i don’t really make my own schedule we had an annual review before xmas where they gave me an updated job description i don’t have an official contract, just an at-will employment agreement they ask me to do random things like help mend a piece of clothing for a friend and helping to clean up the shop for customers (this makes me feel like i’m an employee, not a contractor) they…

someone in another sub advised me to post here for feedback. i’m a 1099 contractor for a small company. here are some points that might be important.

  • i get paid $17/hour via zelle.
  • i go into their store for my job, which includes sewing, alterations, making clothes, etc.
  • they give me tasks and specify how they want it done
  • they would not allow me to work ft hours and recently they cut my hours to 2 days/week which means i don’t really make my own schedule
  • we had an annual review before xmas where they gave me an updated job description
  • i don’t have an official contract, just an at-will employment agreement
  • they ask me to do random things like help mend a piece of clothing for a friend and helping to clean up the shop for customers (this makes me feel like i’m an employee, not a contractor)

they told me how much i would be getting paid at the start (it was min wage at the time). i had no idea what an independent contractor was when i got hired as i was right out of college, but know i’m thinking that i’ve been taken advantage of. i havent had to pay taxes yet bc i don’t make enough, but am trying to get some clarity on the situation before reporting to the irs.
i’m so conflicted about this bc they are such great ppl who have really helped me out on a personal level and i feel like i could permanently burn a bridge if i end up reporting them, and the industry within the city i live in is quite small so this may affect me later.

i am looking for another job, but in the meantime should i just file a complaint?
