Question for folks who work in retail

I am seeking advice from folks who work in retail. Just before Christmas, I was in a national chain department store. Like Ross or Kohl’s. It was ridiculously busy. I’ve purchased many things that night. One of them was a purse. The purse was a gift, and the receiver did not like the color, so I want to return it. I looked at my receipt from the night I bought it, and the purse is not on the receipt. The person who rang up my items must have missed it. I want to know if I will get the person in trouble if I take the purse back to the store? I will just give it to them, I’m not expecting money. I want to know if I will get the person in trouble if I take the purse back to the store? I will just give it to them, I’m not expecting money. We all make mistakes, and I have worked retail during the holidays and it’s hell. I don’t want the clerk to get in a lot of trouble.

What are your thoughts? If a lot of people think the clerk will get in a lot of trouble, I will give the purse to a charity organization.

Thanks.
