Why do retail employees have to take abuse from customers?

For example, I work in a suit sales position where our low end suits cost around 300$ for jacket and pants without Alteration costs, shirts, ties, or shoes. I work in a higher class area but I'm in no means high class. My checks pay the rent and not much else. I'm on SNAP benefits. I had a client snap at me today because they had a budget of $50usd and wanted a full suit. Mind you, our shirts only are $50usd. I took measurements. Some slim guys can fit in the cheaper children's suits but not this time. I told him I can try my best to help and I looked through clearance to find something classy he can wear within his budget. I couldn't. Customer flipped out at me, calling me 'discriminatory' and snobbish, ended a tirade with “Well thanks for fucking nothing, bitch,” and left. I was…

I asked manager if I should've taken 250$ off of a new suit for him. He said no, but I could've done more.

Like what? What could I have done?
