I've worked for a major retail chain for almost two years. I'm a full-time supervisor and have had zero write-ups or oral warnings. While retail provides my primary income, I'm also an adjunct professor at a local university, teaching two classes a semester. When this major corporation hired me, they knew about the 6 or so hours a week that I'm unavailable due to my teaching schedule, but they said it wasn't an issue.
Today, however, they sat me down and handed me a copy of a company policy (effective back in 2005 but never enforced) that says I must have open availability and must either resign or switch to part-time (and likely take a demotion). Either way, my income isn't enough to survive.
I'm in NJ. What are my options? What if I refuse to decide one or the other?
Any advice is appreciated!
