Coworker appalled that I think an employee with cancer should continue getting paid during treatment

Someone at my workplace was recently diagnosed with cancer and needs surgery. A few of us were able to raise some money for them, and a few others donated vacation time so this person could continue to get paid while they're out for treatment. I mentioned how ridiculous I thought it was that we have to even do that. A coworker asked me what I meant by that and I reiterated that it's insane someone has to worry about keeping their lights on and putting food on the table when they get diagnosed with cancer. The coworker said “so you think they should get unlimited paid vacation?” and i said in the case of illness, especially cancer, yes, I do. The coworker made a face and huffed a bit before leaving. Like is it really such a crazy idea that people shouldn't have to worry about becoming homeless or getting their lights cut off when they're sick??
