Wondering everyone’s thoughts – it could be that I’m overreacting/reacting poorly, so wanted to get outside perspective. Mid-2022 I took on a short-term freelance contract for a company (let’s call it X LLC) that excels in their field but were outsourcing a lot of supplementary but related services to outside companies. While X LLC are brilliant at what they do, they didn’t have the knowledge or skill set to offer the additional services. I’ve been in my industry for many years, and my role was to build them an internal department that could offer those services, which I’ve now done, essentially using my knowledge and skills and I’m running that department single-handedly, still as a contractor.

Quite often this involves 14-16 hour days and offering 24/7 support to clients.

The new (my) department is now incredibly profitable, largely due to my skill set and the hours I put in. Within a year it’s foreseeable that this department could be more profitable than the company’s primary activities.

The current conversation with the owners of X LLC is that they want to put me on full-time employment, which invariably would pay less than I’m earning as a freelance contractor, and a new company-wide directive has come out that ALL staff are required to send through an email at the end of every work day bullet pointing what you worked on, and where you spent your time.

My initial reaction is I don’t want to be paid less for making them more money; that as a professional in my field, updating daily on my work productivity feels insulting, and I’m a little bent out of shape.

I wanted to get other opinions before I say anything or make any long term decisions.
