When do you ask about a job opening’s compensation?

I'm currently unemployed and looking for a job. I have 10+ years of experience in my field, so I expect to be compensated fairly for it. If a job posting does not list the salary range, when do you ask about the pay? Currently, I will email the recruiter and ask about compensation before I submit an application. Has that worked for anyone else, or do you go further in the application process before asking? I'm trying to avoid wasting time with jobs that don't pay enough, but I don't want to chase off any potential decent positions. Last time I was unemployed was in 2011 during the recession, so I accepted the job without knowing what it pays. I can now be picky about jobs, so I want to see what works for everyone else
