What’s it like to live in gaol/prison?

Never been. Currently don't have a reason to go but when I think about the cost of living, and how I spend my day each day to afford said cost, I start to think that perhaps being in gaol isn't such a big compromise. Free food, free time from not having to prepare food, also more free time because you're not working, free electricity, free shelter, free water. To me it seems you give up some freedom for many more free perks.
