Antiwork

I’m expected to sacrifice my only 2 days off in the name of work.

So in my country (New Zealand) we go by the standard 5 days of work, 2 day weekend. I am a 15 year old currently at high school. This is how my days break up Monday: I go to school from 8:35 to 3:10. I then have a guitar class afterwards I attend from 3:30 to 4:00 Tuesday: school again. Afterwards I have a cooking class from 4:30 to 7:00 Wednesday: school. Drama class from 3:30 to 4:30 Thursday: school. One of only 2 days I get a break. Friday: school. Then another cooking class for the same amount of time as tuesday. So in my country (New Zealand) we go by the standard 5 days of work, 2 day weekend. I am a 15 year old currently at high school. This is how my days break up

Monday: I go to school from 8:35 to 3:10. I then have a guitar class afterwards I attend from 3:30 to 4:00

Tuesday: school again. Afterwards I have a cooking class from 4:30 to 7:00

Wednesday: school. Drama class from 3:30 to 4:30

Thursday: school. One of only 2 days I get a break.

Friday: school. Then another cooking class for the same amount of time as tuesday.

Saturday: another day I get to relax

Sunday: I go to my grandparents house and help out for a few hours and just spend time with them in general.

This is my week. In New Zealand the youngest a company can legally hire a person (as long as it isnt a dangerous job) is 14. I have this week schedule for almost 3 years. Now, whenever I go somewhere with parents or friends it's always “Why dont you have a job yet?” Or “You so lazy, you dont have a job yet”.

Now comes the most confusing part. Minimum wage is about $21 however since I am a minor I would receive around $16. My friend (I will refer to them as j, and they are also 15) works at new world (the equivalent of Kroger's or publix) from about 9 to 5. J makes around 60 or 80ndollars a day (J states that tips and other factors change how much they receive in a day). Evr since I was 10 I have had a stall where I sell things like old books, toys, DVDs etc. I make around $100 from 10-4. But whenever I state i have a job J always mentions that “what you do isnt a proper job. A job is when you work for a company”.

Also, the jobs that I am legally allowed to apply for state that “To work for us you need to do one full day of your weekend and another day during the week plus any other days you would be free to come in.” Now if we were to look back at my timetable its clear that wouldnt work for me.

So really what I'm saying is that companies and peers want me to sacrifice my only 2 days off a week to capitalism.
