How to destroy morale in one easy step

My boss told a coworker and myself that we would be getting significant raises at the end of this month. He told us both in person. The other day he said we'd both be getting a very small raise, which is the same raise the whole organization is getting as a cost of living increase. We have actually stepped up quite a bit. We've been working voluntary overtime to work on projects. We reorganized our work area and even have taken on leadership duties. It turns out our boss is entirely unaware of any of this, and basically has no sense of what we do whatsoever.

We were doing so good. This could have been the dream team. Morale was high. He destroyed it all with one patronizing conversation. I really thought this was going to be a good long term fit. Now I feel like I don't even want to work under a man like that.

Well you know what? You reap what you sow, and you get what you pay for. It turns out the organization next door is paying a dollar an hour more to start. Hmmm… Isn't that interesting…
