CMV: Layoffs are tough, but fair. If people are able to leave a company whenever they want, companies should be able to let go of someone in the same way.

What's in the title, basically. I keep seeing this outrage against layoffs, but I don't know what people expect. Should companies guarantee to keep you forever while you can leave at any time? During the Great Resignation workers took great advantage of the right to leave, now companies are taking advantage of the right to let people go. P.S: Please…don't hate me, I'm just trying to understand what people expect, because to me it seems fair.
