What is it with work and thinking they’re more important than school?

(Sorry for bad formatting, I’m on my phone) During my many years being in the workforce I’ve noticed that many, if not all, companies think they’re above school when it comes to priority. I have recently decided to go back to school (college) to land a job in something I actually like. That being said my new manager did not take kindly to that. They threw a fit, saying work should be my number 1 priority. Of course I retorted that it obviously isn’t, and never will be. I mentioned valuing my personal goals and needs above all else. Now according to them I’m “not a team player” and “an unreliable employee.” They said this despite me giving them a 2 week’s notice that I’d be going to go back to school, in order to help them prepare. Anyways, this notion of work needing to be all that matters in my life is so unbelievably psycho in my opinion. Like a toxic partner that has controlling habits facepalm
