For almost 2 years I worked as an IT Specialist I working 10 – 12 hours a day M-F sometimes weekends in order to make ends meet. Here is a little of what I handled:
onboarding/off boarding I created scripts to automate half of the Helpdesk work load (was informed that i should not have created them) managed all of the incoming requests via email.
I wanted to be a team lead, I was informed that even though I was deemed a team lead without the title I am too young for the position.
I attempted to get on a different team within my department and I was informed since you do not have a degree you need 10 years of experience and that I am to young for the position. Even though I wasn’t on the team and I wasn’t supposed to create scripts my manager was sending them to me for scripts.
So I started looking for a new position, which I started a month ago I love it. I am sleeping more, I am spending more time with my family, and I get to travel to other states when needed. For salary I don’t need to worry about doing overtime to make ends meet.
When I put in my two weeks the following happened: they tried the following scare tactics: you will pay more in health insurance (I knew this because no company will ever match $100 a month for a family of 4) out retirement package is so good (you have to stay there for 5 years in order to be fully vested in the program). I told them I do not care about the benefits it’s not why I am leaving.
The counter offer: immediate promotion to a IT Specialist II with an empty promise of a salary. I refused the offer as they couldn’t promise me the exact figures.
Edit 1: thought I should mention my age, I am 28
